André Breton published the Surrealist Manifesto 100 years ago just as physicists first peered into the profoundly perplexing world of quantum mechanics. Works of Surrealism feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur. Surrealists looked to Freud's concepts of free association, dream analysis, and accessing the unconscious to liberate our imagination. They emphasized that "one could combine elements not normally found together to produce illogical and startling effects." Scientists have achieved the same results hidden in a fundamental physical reality that defies our simplest intuition.
